Are you interested to try braces but worried about how long it will take? The typical length of time prescribed for orthodontics is usually more than two years but that is not the case anymore. New technology such as self-ligating braces has immensely speeded up the process. Here is a guide to understanding how self-ligating braces work.
Self-ligating braces sometimes referred to as speed braces remove the need for the elastic or metal tie usually found on traditional braces. Instead, self-ligating hardware keeps the wire attached to the bracket through a removable metal piece. This change in design helps braces work more efficiently and comfortably.
Compared to traditional braces, self-ligating braces require 40% less orthodontist appointments. Without bands, there is less resistance, so your teeth can move freely. While this helps the braces move faster, it also makes them more comfortable. You don’t have to worry about suffering years of intense pain from traditional braces.
If you or someone you know is considering braces, worrying about needing them for an extended period of time is no longer valid. Self-ligating braces have speeded up the process enough to make them worth anyone’s time.
Tips for Keeping Your Teeth Clean With Braces
You’ve been brushing your teeth your whole life. You know how it’s done, and you know how important it is. So what is the big deal with braces? Just keep doing what you’re doing, right? Wrong! Braces change everything and dental hygiene is more important than ever. Here are some tips to keeping your teeth clean with braces:
Brush After Every Meal
That’s right – every meal. That means no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you need to make time to brush after you eat. Otherwise, food can get stuck between the wires and sit there all day. This not only looks bad, but can hurt your teeth and stink up your breath.
Make a “To Go” Kit
Since brushing after eating is so important, make a to-go kit so you can brush wherever you eat. This should include a travel toothbrush, travel toothpaste and a small brush to get in between the wires. When that piece of spinach is stuck at school, you’ll be happy you did!
Floss
Flossing is difficult especially with braces, but it’s important. Food has a harder time falling out of your teeth so you need to work to get it all out. You only need to floss once a day and you can find special tools for threading the floss through your teeth. Ask your orthodontist about the best way to floss.
Use these tips to keep your teeth clean during braces. If you have any questions or think it’s time for you to get your braces, do not hesitate to ask an orthodontic specialist in Manhattan Beach!
Are Braces a Good Idea as an Adult?
When we picture orthodontist patients, we typically think of teenagers, but this isn’t entirely accurate. About 25% of all orthodontist patients are over the age of eighteen. It’s never really too late to get braces, but is it right for you?
There are two main reasons why adults would choose to wear braces: to reduce the risk for future problems and to change the look of their teeth.
As we age, problems can develop from crooked teeth and jaw. These problems include tooth decay, headache, earache, and trouble with normal mouth functions such as chewing or speaking. Talk to your orthodontist, and if they think you may be at risk for future problems, it may be time to talk about braces.
If you are conscious about your teeth, then braces are definitely a good idea for you! There’s no reason to continue feeling uncomfortable. Invisalign might be a good idea because you can straighten your teeth without the metal brackets.
Guide to Avoiding Problem Foods With Braces
Braces completely change the way you eat and what you eat. For awhile, you’ll have to say goodbye to some sweets and treats to earn that fabulous smile. Here is a guide of foods to avoid.
Sticky Foods
Sticky foods such as caramel and taffy are a recipe for disaster. They can stick to your brackets and pull them off. Avoid anything sticky while wearing braces.
Hard Foods
Hard candies, nuts, or other crunchy foods can knock your brackets right off. Unless you want an emergency trip to the orthodontist, stay with soft, chewy foods until the braces come off
Foods You Bite Into
This category actually applies more to fruits and vegetables than anything else. Don’t ever bite into an apple, carrot, celery or anything else big, hard, and crunchy. Instead, cut up your snack. Eat corn off the cob and choose apple bites instead of the whole apple. Otherwise you may have found some brackets lodged in your fruit.
Remember, that these dietary restrictions are only temporary. Eating foods you shouldn’t can only make you wear braces for a longer period.

What is the average cost of braces?
Braces are known for being overly expensive. With so many options in orthodontics now, you have more choices for how much you will pay. Here is to give you an idea about the cost of braces:
Metal Braces
The cost of traditional metal braces depends on the patient’s condition. This is typically the least expensive option, but often takes the longest.
Invisalign
Invisalign is comparable to traditional braces. They may be a little more expensive, but you can’t see them so it might feel worth the extra cost.
Self-Ligating Braces
Self-Ligating braces usually cost more than traditional braces, but move faster so you don’t have to wear them longer. You have to decide if it’s worth the extra cost.
Health Insurance
Check with your health and dental insurance to see if they will help with the cost of braces. Unlike other cosmetic dentistry like whitening, braces are usually deemed “medically necessary” and will be covered by insurance.
The average cost of braces depends on the severity of your orthodontic needs. If you want to figure out a more accurate cost for you or your family, give Beach Braces a call! Beach Braces has the right team of orthodontic specialist in Manhattan Beach to help you achieve that beautiful smile.

When Do I Get My Braces Off?
As orthodontists, we are constantly asked by our patients when they can finally get those pesky braces off. While of course the amount of time braces are on depends on the individual and their specific needs, there are basic steps of treatment used here that pertain to most people.
Contents
Stages of Treatment
Typically, though, there are three stages of treatment that every patient must go through. The order of these treatment stages can be in any old order or even overlap, but they must occur nonetheless. These three stages are:
Fixing the Crowding and Spacing of Teeth
In order to fix the crowding of teeth, there are two different steps that can be taken. The orthodontist can either expand the arches or extract some of the teeth. Remember, teeth can’t be aligned properly if they do not have enough room in the mouth. As far as whether to expand the arches or remove teeth is, that is determined based on a number of factors. Some of these factors include:
The first step in resolving any crowding that may be going on in the mouth is to make room so that each and every tooth can be aligned properly. If the patient has ample amounts of room before getting the braces put on, this space will be closed up first and foremost.
Aligning the Teeth
Braces are an important part of straightening the patient’s teeth. That’s why wires, elastic chains and springs are put into place. In fact, these gadgets are known to help rotate and steer the teeth into their rightful position. Also, during this step repositioning is achieved with the use of individual brackets. Sometimes these brackets aren’t put in right away. Some of the reasons for this stem from:
Once the teeth in the mouth have been somewhat aligned, the brackets can then be placed in. This helps make sure that they’re on in the right position.
Correcting Any Issues with the Bite
The last stage of treatment focuses on fixing the bite found in the mouth. In other words, the upper teeth have to fit the lower ones. Braces will help eliminate an overbite or underbite that may have occurred over time as well as a crossbite or deep bite. To get rid of any issues with the bite, wires, rubber bands, springs and possibly even surgery are employed. Once the backs of the top teeth land right on the fronts of the bottom ones, the perfect bite is achieved.
Figuring Out When to Take the Braces Off
Usually during the last stage, when the bite is being corrected, patients start asking “when do I get my braces off?” That’s because during that time, the look of crowded, crooked teeth is completely gone. The patient is therefore completely satisfied with the way their teeth looks. However, the braces can’t be taken off right there and then because this last stage where the bite is being fixed is so important to the health and stability of the teeth.
In order for a patient to figure out whether or not they are close to getting their braces off, they should go through the following checklist:
1. Are your teeth currently straight?
2. Are any spaces that were once between your teeth completely gone?
3. Do the upper front teeth now correctly overlap the lower front teeth?
4. Is your overbite or underbite issue eliminated?
Your Orthodontist Knows Best
If you notice that your chid’s teeth are still not straight, have visible room between them or there is a clear overbite going on, it is definitely not time to get their braces taken off. However, if the answer to each of the questions listed in the checklist above is yes, there is a good chance that they can have their braces removed. Remember, though, it is up to their orthodontist on when they should have their braces taken off. They have the ultimate say as they are experts in this field. They have a level of knowledge and experience that allows them to know exactly when your child’s teeth have achieved the look desired. Trust us, you do not want to have your child’s braces taken off too soon because that can just lead to further problems. After all, you want the issues that led them to having braces put in to begin with completely corrected.

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 5: Carrots
Healthy eating is more than just about your waistline or a number on the scale. Eating the right foods can also ensure that you and your children’s teeth are strong and healthy. Finding the right teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables means that your smile, when combined with our care, will never look better.
Contents
Why are carrots good for my teeth?
We all know that, besides tasting great, carrots are chock full of important vitamins and minerals. These vital nutrients help build teeth health and prevent damage. Additionally, the crunchy nature of carrots actually helps clean teeth to prevent decay. So, for healthy teeth and a great smile, grab a carrot the next time you feel like snacking.
Are carrots ok to eat with braces?
Different types of braces have different food restrictions. Generally speaking, however, carrots are ok to eat with the proper precautions. We do suggest waiting a few days to eat harder foods, like carrots, after first getting your braces. Additionally, it’s a good idea to cut up the carrots to prevent injury or damage to the hardware.
You should have been provided with detailed information during your last visit on what foods are and aren’t permitted, but feel free to always call our office and ask for additional information if you aren’t sure about something.
Does Invisalign work even when eating carrots?
There’s a reason why Invisalign is taking the world by storm: the ease of continuing your life as normal while wearing it. Braces come with all sorts of food restrictions, while Invisalign does not. In other words, you can feel free to bite into a full carrot without a single concern in the world.
Remember, at Beach Braces, we like to focus on overall dental health. If you’re worried your smile could be better, then give us a call today; we would love the chance to work with you.

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 4: Bananas
Although the different types of braces available today are much more aesthetically pleasing than the bulky metal styles of the past, some patients still have a difficult time adjusting to their new look. Understanding what to expect before, during, and after braces help people feel more at ease about the whole process.
Contents
Preparation For Braces
Orthodontists and their especially trained staff members help parents explain the process to younger children so they know how to care for their teeth while wearing braces. They can also discuss some food limitations and the various teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables that can be enjoyed in place of other crispy, chewy, or sticky foods.
Proper Oral Hygiene
New patients can choose from a variety of different types of braces depending on the overall condition of their bite and any other unique needs or considerations. Choosing braces colors and styles is the fun part, but caring for teeth after braces have been applied is serious business. Using a proper oral rinse after meals and before or after brushing can be instrumental in dislodging food particles from the braces. Special tools are available to help individuals with braces carefully floss their teeth daily. In addition, it is vitally important to thoroughly brush teeth, gums, and braces at least twice per day.
Balanced Nutrition
Eating well while wearing braces is important for two main reasons. First, some foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits and sugary sodas, can damage tooth enamel. Second, braces can be sensitive and break when patients try to bite into hard foods such as corn on the cob or apples. Teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables such as bananas and grapes are perfect choices for individuals with braces. Bananas provide essential calcium and potassium that helps keep bones and teeth strong and healthy.

Will Having Teeth Removed Ruin My Face?
When it’s necessary to have multiple teeth removed, a common concern is how it will affect the appearance of the patient’s face. While some patients may experience a slight difference in their facial features, the fact is that most patients will have no noticeable difference in their outward appearance.
Contents
Determining If Tooth Extraction Is Necessary
Rest assured that the decision to remove teeth is not on taken lightly. A careful examination typically includes x-rays and an extensive evaluation of the teeth that may need to be removed to determine if there is another option where the teeth can be saved.
Reasons for the Removal of Teeth
• Misaligned teeth (including non-functioning teeth)
• Tooth infections (to prevent spreading to other teeth)
• Extra teeth (supernumerary teeth)
• Overcrowding (too many teeth for your mouth size)
To answer the question, “Will having teeth removed ruin my face?”, the answer is not likely due to the many advances in dental technology and the wide selection of options available to patients today. Take comfort in knowing that the procedure will take place in a modern office, performed by a highly trained professional.
Before and After Braces
Before considering braces, realize that the technology behind braces has changed over the years. Braces today are more comfortable and, in some cases, virtually invisible. Before getting braces, your orthodontist will go over your options and answer any questions you may have to ensure that you have all the information you need to make a well-informed decision when it comes to deciding if braces are right for you. After braces are removed, the following steps are usually taken:
• A thorough dental exam
• X-rays (to confirm that a proper alignment has been achieved)
• Fitting for a retainer (see below)
Don’t be afraid to ask questions before, during and after each visit. After braces are installed, be sure to follow your specific care instructions and report any unusual discomfort or pain.
Wisdom Teeth and Braces
If your wisdom teeth come in after you get your braces off, you may need to have those teeth pulled to prevent misalignment from the additional teeth. This, however, is decided on a case-by-case basis.
Wearing a Retainer
Most patients also need to wear a retainer for a certain period of time once the braces are removed to allow the gums and muscles within the mouth to adapt to the new position of the teeth. Retainers can also correct other minor orthodontic problems.
Wearing Your Retainer Is Important
While you may want to declare your freedom after your braces come off, it’s important to wear your retainer as instructed. It’s estimated that about 25 percent of dental patients compromise their end treatment by failing to wear their retainer as directed.
What to Expect With Braces
The first step in getting braces is to determine if you are a good candidate for braces. Patients with additional dental problems, such as gum disease, will need to have those problems corrected first before braces can be considered.
The Initial Fitting
Once it’s determined that braces will work for your particular misalignment issue, you’ll go through an initial fitting and related dental exam. The placement of braces includes:
• Attachment of brackets (to premolar and front teeth)
• Ring-like bands (placed around the molar teeth)
• Arch wire (to connect brackets and bands)
Note: Rubber bands and headgear may also be required, depending on the extent of the misalignment.
Regular Dental Appointments and Adjustments
Regular adjustments will be required to keep slight pressure on the teeth that need to be aligned. There may be some discomfort after each adjustment due to the tightening that will go away.
Care In-between Appointments
The most common issue with patients is cleaning braces after meals. You’ll be given special instructions on how to remove any food that may get stuck in your braces. If you follow your doctor’s care instructions, you should notice a positive change before and after braces are installed.
What You Need to Know About Braces
Braces are more versatile today than the braces of yesterday. While braces are commonly associated with teenagers, patients of all ages can benefit from wearing braces to correct alignment issues. Speaking of misconceptions, braces are not magnetic and you’re not likely to get radio and TV reception through your braces.
Wearing Your Retainer Is Important
While you may want to declare your freedom after your braces come off, it’s important to wear your retainer as instructed. It’s estimated that about 25 percent of dental patients compromise their end treatment by failing to wear their retainer as directed.
Average Cost of Braces
The cost of wearing braces can vary greatly, depending on the extent of your dental needs. For instance, patients with relatively straight teeth may only need to wear braces for several months to correct the problem and require no additional dental work beyond routine follow-up visits.
What’s Included in the Cost of Braces?
Patients with extensive overbites and related dental problems may have to wear braces for a few years and undergo additional dental procedures, ultimately affecting the overall cost of braces. Keep in mind that the cost of braces includes any related procedures and necessary office visits. Be sure to ask questions up front and get all the information you need concerning cost before making a final decision.
Insurance and Braces
Most dental insurance plans cover the cost of braces. However, if you do not have dental insurance, convenient payment plans can still allow you to enjoy the many benefits of getting braces.

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 3: Kiwi
Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables like kiwi are enhanced even more when you consider the amount of vitamin C packed into just one large sample.
Contents
KIWI BENEFITS
An oral-friendly fruit like kiwi can be best explained by showing its value in specific steps:
Offers more than 100 percent of your daily recommended daily amount of vitamin C, which is a natural collagen.
That supply of vitamin C is important when you consider that a lack of it results in more tender gums, which can cause pain and other potential problems.
When your gums are tender, they become more of a breeding ground for bacteria, which creates issues related to periodontal health.
THE CASE FOR BRACES
The determined efforts you make to keep your teeth white and as clean as possible unfortunately can’t guarantee keeping them straight. When that happens, the need for braces becomes evident, with the average cost of braces dependent upon a variety of different factors.
The main determinants in the price are based on what type of braces you select, how severe to problem is and whether one or both arches need such treatment.
Such an investment is due to advanced knowledge of the process that your orthodontist possesses and offer the best course of treatment.
AN UNBEATABLE SELLING POINT
The results become clearly evident by simply looking in the mirror before and after braces. The effect can provide a striking difference, resulting in a wide smile that others will appreciate for years to come.

Best Age for Your Child to Get Orthodontic Braces
GIF courtesy of giphy.com
As a parent, you want what’s best for your child, and this could mean getting their teeth straightened in order to improve their self-esteem, looks and confidence levels. Crooked teeth are incredibly common, and most people aren’t born or develop into having gorgeous straight teeth. This is where braces can come in handy, but it’s a subject that is touchy for a lot of parents because they may not know when the best age for your child to get orthodontic braces is. Knowing what age is right for them can help treatment to go by more smoothly, ensuring that their teeth stay straight for a lifetime.
Things to Consider When Getting a Child Braces
For those parents who want to know the best age for your child to get orthodontic braces, it’s all about knowing what to consider about the actual treatment that’s involved. Keep in mind that colored braces for kids will normally be put onto the teeth and stay there for about a year or two. This could vary depending on the severity of your child’s teeth and how crooked they are, but the average time a child will have braces is for about one or two years. This length of time may not seem like a huge deal for you, but it’s definitely an enormous deal for a growing kid.
Also, when the braces are actually being put on, your child will have to sit in the orthodontist’s treatment chair for a good hour or two. This may be too long for younger kids and younger teens, so this is a consideration that you’ll want to take in before you visit your local orthodontist. Colored braces for kids can make it fun and entertaining to get braces and to show them off to their friends, but the actual treatment that will be involved is something that all parents need to think about before they take their child to the orthodontist. It’s something that you want to go as smoothly as possible, and it cannot be like this when the child is either too young or still too immature to take things seriously.
FAQ # 2: Beach Braces:At what age should I schedule an appointment for an orthodontic screening?
Knowing the Care of the Braces
Another thing that all parents need to realize is that braces have to be cared for a lot differently than normal teeth. Braces colors and brackets can shine gorgeously when they’re brushed correctly, but this can sometimes be a chore for kids who are still getting used to just being able to brush their normal teeth. If your child is not able to brush their normal teeth without a lot of fuss, there may be issues when they have braces put on. While it isn’t impossible or overly difficult to brush teeth that have braces on them, it is more difficult than just brushing ordinary teeth.
Taking good care of the braces colors and brackets is essential for optimal treatment. If the teeth aren’t cared for properly, decay and cavities can become a huge problem, and this can hinder the overall look and health of the teeth despite the fact that they are being professionally straightened. This might be something you’ll want to discuss with both your child and the orthodontist if you would like for your child to begin treatment.

When is the Best Age?
There really is no set age for a child to get braces, since all kids are different in terms of maturity. A 12 year old child might be mature enough to get braces on, but another 12 year old child may not even be able to brush their teeth correctly enough to where they’ll be able to take care of their new braces. Knowing your own child and how well they are able to handle going to an orthodontist or other type of doctor can also help you to figure out if treatment is even viable. In order for orthodontic treatment to be a success, you and your child need to go to the orthodontist routinely to get wires tightened and new plastic trays made up if they choose to go with an invisible brace option. If your teen continually skips their appointments, this does nothing for the overall straightening quality of their teeth.
Discussing orthodontic work with your child is the best place for you to start, since they should always have a say in their own treatment. Most kids will be eager and willing to straighten out their teeth, especially if they are dealing with severe crowding and mouth pain. This is why it is so important to sit down and have a good conversation with them about possibly going to get braces. Try to let them know what should be expected during treatment so that they feel as though they are prepared. It’s never a good idea for you to hide things from your kids and let them find out when it is too late for them to change their minds.
Visiting the Orthodontist
Once you’ve talked to your child or teen about going for braces, it’s time to visit the orthodontist to begin treatment. During the first visit, x-rays may be taken of your child’s teeth, and this will be followed up with a consultation that discusses different options available to your teen or child and what they should expect. Encourage your child to ask as many questions as they want so that they can feel prepared for the treatment that will be coming up in the near future.
If you think that your child or teen is ready for braces, you’ll want to contact Beach Braces Orthodontics to set up a consultation appointment. This will allow you and your child to see what types of braces are there for them, and how long the overall treatment may take from start to finish. Your child will be thrilled that they have gorgeous and straight teeth after the braces have come off, and they can feel a lot more confident in showing off their smile to all of their friends at school.

What are Lingual Braces?
Unlike traditional braces that are placed on the front of the teeth for the entire world to see, lingual braces are placed on the inside of the teeth facing the tongue. In fact, the word “lingual” means tongue. From the outside, even up-close, they are just about invisible. Sometimes referred to as “inside” braces, they are similar to traditional braces in terms of orthodontic principles and the type of hardware used.

What is the Treatment Procedure?
You’ve had a consultation with your orthodontist. You’ve had your exam and x-rays, and you’ve decided to get lingual braces. Through advanced robotic wire bending technology and the use of CAD/CAM, your braces will be custom fabricated.
It’s a pretty involved process.
Your Orthodontist Takes Impressions of Your Teeth
The impressions of your upper and lower teeth will be extremely detailed and accurate. The brackets and wires are made at the dental laboratory. They also outline the final desired alignment outcome.
Next, the Fabrication Process Begins
The Brackets are Returned to Your Orthodontist
Now would be a good time to take a “before” picture for your before and after braces comparison when your treatment is finished.
Attaching the Braces
You’ll be back in the office every few weeks to have the brackets tightened to ensure your teeth are being straightened according to plan.
How Much do They Cost?
Because of the sophisticated technology and robotics used to create custom fabricated braces, lingual braces generally cost more than other options, like traditional, ceramic and removable aligners. Examine the lingual braces pros and cons. Ask yourself just how important the cosmetic advantage is in your daily life. Do your research. If you decide that it’s worth a little more, then it’s worth a little more.

Understanding How Self-Ligating Braces Work
Are you interested to try braces but worried about how long it will take?
