It seems that there is an increasing number of younger children wearing braces these days. Not that long ago, it was common to see children in their pubescent years visiting the orthodontist for the first time; however, that common age has dropped drastically. Many mothers are asking, what is the best age for my child to see an orthodontist? Many of these moms may be shocked at the answer.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the best age to bring your child in to see an orthodontist is seven. The inquisitive mind may want to gain a more lucid perspicacity of what can possibly be accomplished at such a young age. It is important to understand that not every orthodontic issue will be treatable at the age of seven; however, bringing your child in to visit the orthodontist at this age will allow the orthodontist to effectively identify any existing or potential problems as early as possible. This will allow for the proper planning and strategies as far as preventative and corrective measures are concerned. By age seven, most orthodontic-related problems can, at least, be identified.
Deviation from Normal Patterns
Something as simple as disorder in the manner in which baby teeth fall out could be indicative of problematic issues that will need to be addressed at some point. Baby teeth normally fall out in a specific order, with their first eight primary teeth falling out between the ages of six to eight. It is also common for the child’s permanent molars to emerge during this same period. By age seven, a child should have at least four permanent incisors and four permanent molars. Deviation from the normality or this order could indicate developmental issues that may require specific attention
Spacing and Crowding
By the age of seven it will be possible for an orthodontist to determine if the child has crowding and spacing issues. Spacing issues normally refer to situations in which a tooth is lost prematurely or one does not develop properly — leaving a permanent space between teeth. These types of spaces can be problematic and will have to be addressed by the orthodontist.
Crowding general refers to a situation in which the teeth are bunched too close together. This condition may require the expansion of the arches or the removal of certain teeth.
Different Types of Braces
Obviously, one of the most commonly used tools by orthodontists is braces. Braces have the capacity to handle spacing problems, crowding and more. Not too long ago, the options, as far as braces are concerned, were quite limited; however, that has changed significantly.
Here are some of the options that are available:
Traditional braces: These are the braces that are seen most often. They are metal, and they are also highly visible. The brackets on the modern version of these braces is less conspicuous that its predecessor. Technology has also contributed to enhancing the efficacy of these braces. There are now heat-activated arch wires that have the capacity to use the subject’s body heat to promote an expedited movement process.
- Pros: The least expensive style of all of the braces on the market
- Cons: Highly conspicuous
Ceramic braces: Ceramic braces are almost identical in design to medical braces, but they differ in the fact they are available in tooth color or clear in order to make them more inconspicuous.
- Pros: Not as noticeable as metal braces. Additionally, they have the capacity to move teeth quicker than traditional braces
- Cons: More expensive that traditional braces and there is a greater proclivity toward staining
Lingual Braces: The design of lingual braces are the same as traditional braces. What makes this type of process different is the placement. Instead of the traditional outside placement, they are placed on the inside of the teeth.
- Pros: Completely invisible from an outside view
- Cons: More expensive than traditional braces, and they are more difficult to clean and maintain
Invisalign: Invisalign uses a process that includes a series of 18 to 30 custom-designed clear plastic aligners that resemble mouth guards. These aligners are removable and they are replaced every couple of weeks.
- Pros: Nearly invisible, and there are no limits to what the subject can eat or drink
- Cons: Not effective for serious orthodontic issues, and they are only available for teens and adults.

When visiting Manhattan Beach Orthodontics, you will be able to consult with a specialist that will be able to advise you on what the best options are as far as braces are concerned. Your child’s specific issues may limit the options that are available.
According to Dr. Greg Jorgenson, it is best to begin screening all young patients at no later than age seven. Another common issue that can be detected and addressed at this age is vertical biting problems. A vertical biting issue is when the bites are too deep, where the top teeth cover the bottom teeth completely. One of the common causes for vertical biting problems is lower jaw that is too small.
It is also possible to discover overbite problems, which are generally indicative of a tongue or finger problem. This is something that the orthodontist can begin addressing immediately through helping to identify the destructive habit. The sooner that the destructive habit can be eliminated, the less structural issues will have to be addressed later.
Procrastination in getting your child to their first orthodontist visit can lead to the exacerbation of existing issues. Additionally, it can cause you to miss an opportunity to prevent potential issues. When your child turns seven, call Manhattan Beach Orthodontics to schedule the initial examination and consultation. The professionals a Manhattan Beach Orthodontics will provide you with the assurance that will allow you to have the confidence that your child is in good hands.

What Are Retainers?
A dental retainer is a device that supports the teeth and prevents them from shifting out of position. Manufacturers usually craft them out of metal, but some providers do offer plastic devices. Each retainer is custom made for the patient according to the plan that the specialist has for him or her. Several types of retainers exist. A reliable orthodontist can help a person to decide which device fits best for teeth alignment progress.

Benefits of Invisalign #5 Healthier periodontal tissue and less risk of enamel decalcification by avoiding brackets.
You probably have heard of the many benefits of Invisalign clear aligners, but there is new information concerning these dental appliances. Researchers have discovered that aligners help to reduce enamel decalcification such as the type caused by metallic brackets on traditional braces. In addition, patients wearing plastic aligners have healthier periodontal tissue. This means that orthodontic treatment with removable aligners is even more appropriate for mild malocclusions in the mouths of teenagers and adults. To determine if Invisalign aligners are recommended for your dental problems, schedule an appointment with an orthodontist. California residents can check online to see if Manhattan Beach Orthodontics is located nearby.
Brush Teeth Each Day
Selecting the orthodontics needed for your particular dental problems requires an examination with medical imaging. When clear aligners are acceptable, the orthodontist creates a series of molds using a three-dimensional computer software program. You receive 30 sets of aligners with different configurations to straighten teeth gradually. Your orthodontist decides how long each set is worn before throwing the item away to wear new aligners. For most patients, wearing each set for two weeks is recommended. You should wear the aligners as much as possible, but remove the appliances to perform oral health care.

Exciting Innovations in the Orthodontic Field
Invisalign is an orthodontic alternative that is growing in popularity. These clear aligners mean fewer trips to the orthodontist’s office than you would make with traditional treatment options. After careful evaluation, your treatment plan will be tailored to suit your needs. Every two weeks or so, you’ll be given a new set of clear aligners that will gently shift your teeth into the proper position. Length of treatment and cost compares with traditional braces as well. You will have the added flexibility of being able to remove your aligners when you sleep, take part in active sports, or have a special function. You’ll be able to maintain better oral hygiene than you would with brackets on your teeth and your aligners are practically invisible. No one needs to know that orthodontics are at work. Soon enough, they will see the results.

Benefits of Invisalign #3
No one likes losing a tooth, especially if it has to be pulled professionally. Manhattan Beach Orthodontics works with patients every day to help them keep strong, healthy teeth working effectively. Professional orthodontic treatment preserves teeth while straightening and aligning them for permanent benefits.
Protect Your Teeth
Whether you already have missing teeth or are trying to keep from losing them, invisalign orthodontics can help to protect teeth and move them into place where they can last indefinitely. That is the purpose of orthodontics, to preserve a person’s teeth by shifting them into correct spaces in the mouth. Although it used to be that orthodontic treatment was mainly geared towards adolescents, today adults of all ages are enjoying the benefits of invisalign treatment that is making their smiles better than ever for long-term health and an enhanced appearance.
There is no stigma to wearing braces. In fact, because it is a cosmetic procedure, patients are eager to get braces and willingly commit to the time and effort needed for a successful outcome. Busy professionals, moms of young children, and even retired seniors are excited about having this type of work performed by a qualified orthodontist to change their appearance for the better.
Strong, straight teeth do a better job of chewing food and enhancing the digestive process. They are less likely to get cavities, with proper care. Aligned teeth make beautiful smiles at any age, and a lovely smile is arguably the most attractive feature anyone can have.
Find out if you are a candidate for this type of procedure that can lead to great results in a relatively short time by consulting with an orthodontist. Manhattan Beach Orthodontics offers helpful information about the procedures offered and are happy to consult with those who are interested in protecting their teeth and oral health.

Benefits of Invisalign #2 Can approximate the treatment duration more precisely than with braces.
People often fret and wonder about the length of orthodontic treatment when faced with the knowledge that they need braces. Let Beach Braces Orthodontics help assist you in choosing the right treatment plan. Our Manhattan Beach orthodontics office offers a wide array of treatment plans including Invisalign, a system that can approximate the duration of treatment time more precisely than the traditional treatment. Instead of worrying about a lengthy treatment plan with no end in sight, this system will give you an approximate end date to look forward to every day.
Contents
The treatment system
Invisalign is a system that includes specifically designed trays that you are expected to change out approximately every two weeks. After you come in for an appointment, our orthodontist will discuss your previous history and discuss the treatment plans that are right for you. One of the perks of this system is the ability for your orthodontist to approximate the treatment time needed.
Have a wedding coming up? A graduation ceremony? Another major life even that will require a lot of time invested as well as photographs? By being able to approximate the treatment time, you will be able to plan ahead in regard to your orthodontic care. While this treatment is wonderful due to its virtual invisibility on your teeth, it is often imperative to patients that they understand the duration of treatments and have an estimated end time. Busy schedules often conflict with your orthodontics needs and by being able to plan ahead in regard to the length of your treatment is a definite perk.

Benefits of Invisalign #1 No food restrictions.
Orthodontic treatment is a special service for people who have varying degrees of alignment issues. Our Manhattan Beach Orthodontics firm specializes in reconstructing the smile while providing a warm atmosphere for patients. Invisalign is a revolutionary teeth alignment system that offers a wealth of benefits over traditional braces. The following are just a few of the benefits that Invisalign has over other types of orthodontic treatment such as metal devices:
Contents
No Food Restrictions
The best benefit to using the Invisalign system is that it comes with no food restrictions. The system consists of plastic aligners that fit perfectly over the patient’s teeth. The patient can remove the aligners at any time, which means that he or she will have free access to teeth cleaning. Therefore, the patient can enjoy all types of food.
Complete Discretion
Discretion is another benefit of using the system. The aligners are clear and plastic. Other people cannot see that a patient is using the aligner system without being extremely close. The orthodontist and the patient are the only two people who know about it.
Faster Correction Time
The clear plastic orthodontics system has a faster correct time than traditional braces have. Metal orthodontics systems can take up to 24 months to produce results, whereas a patient can improve within 10 months with the plastic system.
Less Pain
Standard orthodontic customers have to worry about the pain of bracket tightening. A person with the plastic system only has to swap out aligners every two weeks. Switching aligners is a painless process that eventually results in a beautiful smile and increased self-esteem.
People with alignment problems can contact our Manhattan Beach Orthodontics office for a consultation. Patricia Panucci is a compassionate orthodontist that strives for perfection and the highest level of patient comfort.

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 10: Pineapples
It’s important to take care of your teeth before and after braces to ensure a winning smile. One of the best ways of taking care of your teeth involves eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. When it comes to teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables, pineapple can’t be beat for its delicious flavor and health benefits.
Contents
Health Benefits of Pineapple
Pineapple has long been praised for its healing powers, which is why people are often encouraged to eat it just before and after surgery in order to make recovery go much smoother. Dentists recommend it for patients undergoing oral surgery as often as doctors who are performing procedures on other areas of the body do.
One of the reasons why pineapple aids with healing is the fact that it helps the body create collagen. Collagen is an essential protein used to form the basis for bones, blood vessel walls, and skin.
Other Health Benefits of Pineapple
There are other benefits aside from healing powers that can be enjoyed from eating pineapple. A few of these unique benefits include:
• Easing inflammation, which can be especially important for anyone suffering from gum disease
• Strengthening the bones, which in turn helps strengthen teeth
• Preventing oral cancers
• Fighting infections that might occur in the mouth and gums
• Improving circulation for healthier gums
Pineapple benefits teeth best when it is eaten fresh without any added sugars or syrups. Although fresh pineapple is best, some benefits can still be enjoyed from eating canned pineapple as well.
Eating the right fruits and vegetables is just as important as any other aspect of dental care. If you’re interested in straightening your teeth, or would like to learn more ways to help keep them healthy, contact Manhattan Beach Orthodontics at 310-379-0006.

Sometimes all the plans of maintaining healthy teeth still results in braces.
DOES INVISALIGN WORK?
Removable braces like Invisalign offers patients a virtually invisible product, and is roughly in the middle of that bracket. That begs the question: Does Invisalign work? It does when done by an experienced orthodontist, since this process isn’t simply putting on the product and waiting for teeth to magically straighten.
Each plan differs and requires someone who can carefully diagnose the proper way to put these plastic tools on and design the best treatment.

Lingual Braces: The design of lingual braces are the same as traditional braces. What makes this type of process different is the placement. Instead of the traditional outside placement, they are placed on the inside of the teeth.
Invisalign: Invisalign uses a process that includes a series of 18 to 30 custom-designed clear plastic aligners that resemble mouth guards. These aligners are removable and they are replaced every couple of weeks.
